Silk Scarf - Colorful Georgian Ornament

Silk Scarf - Colorful Georgian Ornament

The scarf is created with the ornament of the icon of St. John the Baptist.
It features the ornamental motifs from the icon of St. John the Baptist from Breti.

“Father Piros of Breti” — the founder of the Church of St. George in the village of Breti (Kareli Municipality, Diocese of Ruisi and Urbnisi) — was one of the Thirteen Assyrian Fathers. The Monastery of Breti and Father Piros himself were among the most important cultural, educational, literary, and artistic centers throughout the Middle Ages.

In the 11th century, the embossed icon of St. John the Baptist was created here, which became one of the monastery’s main sacred relics (today preserved in the Museum of Fine Arts).

The icon has reached us in a damaged condition — its frame and painted part no longer exist. In the depiction, St. John holds a disk with the inscription: “The voice of one crying in the wilderness” (Prophet Isaiah). Below the disk is another inscription: “Father Michael. St. John the Baptist, intercede for us.”
